Grade-School Students Honored for Daughters of the American Revolution Writings

On April 17, three members of the Conejo Valley chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution were honored with certificates of achievement for their participation in the Junior American Citizen writing contests.

Mrs. Butters, a fifth-grade teacher, and two of her students, Amy Collins and Henry Gugliuzza, received the recognitions. Collins placed second for her original essay, and Gugliuzza placed first for his poem. The presentation of certificates was made at an assembly at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School in Thousand Oaks.

The Junior American Citizen is a National DAR committee with chapters in all fifty states. Each year, the National Committee announces a patriotic or historical theme for an array of student competitions. This year the theme was “The Santa Fe Trail.”

Students participate at the local chapter level, and their work is forwarded for further competition to the state, regional and national levels. Only first- and second-place advance.
