District Raised $1.5 Million Last Year From Parents, Boosters, Support Organizations

Local schools are increasingly turning to fundraising via parent-teacher associations, booster clubs and school support foundations to increase their flexible spending options.

A Conejo Guardian analysis of all voluntary contributions given to the Conejo Valley Unified School District during the 2021-2022 school year found that parents, parent groups and support organizations contributed nearly $1.5 million to the district. Most of that — $905,043 — was donated to the area’s three large high schools. Contributions to schools are deposited into the district’s general fund.

Westlake High School tops the school site list (see appropriate chart) with $436,682 in cash gifts, most of which was used to pay coach salaries for the school’s popular athletic programs.

Last year, local elementary schools raised funds to transform playgrounds into outdoor learning environments. Middle schools raised funds for outdoor science camps traditionally for 6th and 8th graders, who spend several days at Camp Ramah in the Ojai mountains (see appropriate chart).

A complete list of all 2021-2022 gifts can be viewed below. The data was derived from public information reported by the district.

  1. Personally, I think it is pathetic that, given the amount of money that each taxpayer contributes to CVUSD every year, all these volunteers have to round up additional funds in order to sustain their most favored activities. While I appreciate the Guardian’s thorough analysis of this issue, what I’d really be interested in viewing is an analysis of all monies taken in by CVUSD vs all expenditures. How about analyzing exactly what they are spending the taxpayers money on? Are they being good stewards with the peoples money? Are there areas in their budget that would be considered wasteful? How much federal and state money do they receive (with enormous strings attached)? Are there programs and junkets that the taxpayers would be alarmed to know where their funds are going to?
    Just sayin’.
