Professor’s Letter Defends Freedom

My name is Michele Bailey, and I have taught Nutrition, Health & Wellness and Fitness at Ventura College for 27 years. I am a published researcher in the field of Aviation and Space Physiology at NASA and am also a veteran who served as a Captain in the United States Air Force for five years. I love my students and enjoy imparting to them my wealth of knowledge about nutrition and health and the importance of everyday lifestyle choices to their physical and mental well-being.

This investment is especially critical today with the advent of COVID-19. While the virus has a 99.9% survival rate among those 70 years and under (devoid of comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, or heart disease), it is more important now than ever to equip our students with the necessary information, tools and choices they need to increase survivability.

However, the brazen decision to mandate vaccines for all teachers and students, whether online (being considered) or in-person, defies logic and neglects individual consideration. I, myself, recently survived COVID-19, and my antibody tests indicate a more robust, complete and durable immunity than any vaccine can claim.

I am vehemently opposed to this mandate on the grounds of violating the freedom to choose what is best for one’s body. The mandate is unconstitutional, and I took an oath as a service member (a vow I hold dear to this day) to serve my country, to preserve and protect our freedoms, and to uphold the constitution. As such, I cannot in good conscience or faith condone such mandates.

Furthermore, I oppose the mandate on the basis of several other factors:

– mRNA technology is new and needs further study to determine long-term effects (early indications on the CDC’s VAERS reporting system and recent research show reason for concern, including issues of myocarditis, blood clots, neurological issues, autoimmune and cancer resurgence, infertility, early death, etc.).

– Public Health England (PHE) and Israel findings. Specifically, PHE technical report 23 (2/1/2021-9/12/2021) shows the vaccinated are 47% of cases but 70% of deaths. Israel, the most vaccinated country in the world, is reporting the highest rates of COVID-19 infections, and the majority of ICU patients are fully vaccinated. On the bright side, Israeli data confirms that natural immunity, acquired through previous infection, is much stronger and longer lasting – providing protection up to 27 times higher than vaccination – thus opening a realistic path out of the pandemic.

– other therapeutics are available that considerably reduce symptom severity if administered early on in treatment.

– current US vaccines do not prevent transmission of the virus and only exhibit a 40-60% effectiveness in preventing illness, necessitating future boosters (of which there is no seen end).

– the lack of scientific debate and censorship among those who dare ask educated questions is very concerning.

– lockdowns, and mask and vaccine mandates have contributed to sharp increases in depression, drug and alcohol use, and suicide rates in our youth.

Please understand, I am not anti-vaccine but pro-medical choice. Who will stand with me to defend individual liberty and the freedom for our students and faculty to choose? We cannot allow fear to dictate policy. In conclusion, I will not be forced to take this vaccine. I will not be forced to prove my health to work and participate in society. I will not accept the exclusion of people based on their medical status.

You have a weighty decision before you. If you continue to mandate vaccines for all students and employees to work and attend school in person, then you should be prepared to carry the responsibility for its consequences.
